Met Office issues rare amber warning as parts of UK brace for up to 50mm of rain in hours

The has issued an amber weather alert for large parts of , warning of heavy rain and flooding.

is likely to lead to disruption, officials have warned.

These include , Blackburn with Darwen, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and North, South and West Yorkshire.

People have been told to expect spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, and fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life.

“40-50 mm rain is expected fairly widely, with 50-100 mm across west-facing hills. There is a chance a few locations could see in excess of 100 mm.”

The forecaster says on its website: “Keep yourself and others safe; prepare to avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous road conditions. If you must travel, ensure you watch for possible danger and drive cautiously.
