Construction is underway on the Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport in , an £8 billion project set to become a major transportation hub.
The is designed to meet growing demand for both passengers and cargo in the region, projected to serve 62 million passengers and one million tons of cargo annually by 2030, with almost 200 aircraft parking bays.
Capacity is expected to balloon to 85 million passengers and two million tons of cargo annually by 2040, according to its operator.
Located on Dadeng Island in a south-eastern Chinese province, Xiamen is famed as one of China’s garden cities, known for its beautiful parks, tree-lined streets, and sandy beaches.
Its 550,000 square metre terminal is designed in the architectural style native to the Minnan region, and the roof of the airport, which has an upward-curving ridge, was inspired by Hokkien architecture, native to the Fujian region and neighbouring Taiwan.
