SAS Rogue Heroes producer Steven Knight wants to do more series in the future

screenwriter Steven Knight has said that he wants to create more seasons in the future for SAS Rogue Heroes. The hit programme is returning for its explosive second instalment in the New Year.

Speaking exclusively to Express Online and other media outlets, the producer opened up about working with the cast and crew again in Croatia, but hopes that he will get the opportunity to create further seasons.

The programme documents the story of the original SAS, with Connor Swindells returning as Lt Col David Stirling and Jack O’Connell playing Major Paddy Mayne. In a nutshell – it’s all guns, death and plenty of punch-ups.

Season One was set during the North Africa campaign, which was filmed during lockdown, and it’s safe to say that the cast and crew are glad not to be in the Moroccan desert.

Steven said: “I mean, we, in all honesty, I think we were slightly worried about going into season two without the benefit of the desert and the scale and the beauty and the character that it provided.

“And when we set out to find, you know, what our new world of war would look like it was really important that we encountered civilians and we encountered real life and I think working in Croatia was across the board a really positive experience.

“It absolutely delivers on what we needed.”

When questioned if he wants to conclude the story of the SAS, Steven’s answer was a no brainer: “No, we want to take this to the end of the war and just a bit.”

It was also revealed that Connor Swindells was originally not supposed to be in the second season.

At the end of Season One, fans saw Connor’s character being taken to a prisoner of war camp. Season Two is filmed in Croatia and picks up exactly after the events of David’s capture.

Speaking about returning as David Stirling, he said: “I was absolutely delighted to come back, but I was only ever meant to do the first season.

“So, when [producer] Steven Knight delivered episode one and there I was page 59, and I got a call from the wonderful Stephen Smallwood asking what I was doing in the summer…I was truly delighted.”
