Royal author Ingrid Seward discussed one such rule imposed by the late which was broken by one senior royal.

Despite the mishap, all worked out just fine for the couple who recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Prior to their wedding, however, the late not only allowed a rule to be broken but also saw her give rare permission to stay at before there was an engagement.

A large part of this leeway from the late Queen is said to be due to the close bond she shared with this particular royal.

Prior to engagement in 1998, the Queen allowed to stay in Buckingham Palace before she was engaged, which was never allowed before.

This represented a “significant change in attitude” according to Sewell and was a rule the Queen had never previously bent.

One night, Prince Edward tried to creep down the corridor to Sophie’s room while they were both staying at Buckingham Palace, according to .

When he attempted this, he reportedly tripped over one of the Queen’s corgis causing the animal to let out a loud squeal, before the prince quickly return to his own room.

Despite the pair’s unconventional arrangement prior to their nuptials, Seward said to the : “By then, the Queen knew of Charles’ and Andrew’s marriage troubles, so she decided it would be a good idea if Sophie was given a passkey to the palace.

“I think she saw how long she and Edward had been going out, and thought, ‘I’ve got to help this along.’

“She also wanted Sophie to know what she was getting into.”

Prince Edward later proposed to Sophie while on holiday in the Bahamas prior to Christmas Day in 1998.

The royal pair married on June 19, 1999 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle and are the proud parents of Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex.

Queen Elizabeth II and Sophie are said to have had a close relationship, which some described as “like mother and daughter”.

The Countess of Wessex and the late Queen shared similar interests as both reportedly enjoyed horse riding, historical documents and war films.

The pair also spent a great deal of quality time together, particularly on weekends at Windsor, where they would watch films and go on walks together.
