New map reveals cheapest supermarket petrol prices – see how your area stacks up

Drivers have been urged to plan where they fill up on long-distance journeys to avoid paying up to £8 more than necessary for and .

Whilst the  and diesel has not changed significantly over recent months, a new study has found that drivers in various parts of the UK are forced to pay significantly more to fill up their vehicles.

Moreover, the interactive map allows drivers to that offer fuel to find the cheapest price in their area.

On average, offers the cheapest petrol in the country, offering the best price in 87 out of 338 local authorities. However, and offer petrol at the lowest price in 96 and 79 districts respectively.

As a result, brand loyalty may be causing drivers in various parts of the country to pay a small, unexpected fortune for their car’s running costs.

The average cost for supermarket petrol in December 2024 stood at approximately 133.5p per litre, with most motorists considering their local shop to be the cheapest place to buy fuel.

However, the interactive map found that drivers in Northern Ireland pay significantly less than that, with Asda supermarkets selling petrol in Causewway Coast and Glens at 125.7p. As a result, motorists in the area pay about £3.90 less than the average Brit to fill up their tank.

Various other parts of Scotland and England also offer particularly low supermarket fuel prices, with Asda selling fuel in the Scottish Borders at 129.7p per litre and Morrisons retailing it for 131.7p per litre in Neath Port Talbot.

To help drivers fill up for less no matter where in the UK they are, Rebecca Bebbington of NetVoucherCodes recommended that drivers consider loyalty schemes, which various supermarkets offer.

She advised: “Many supermarkets offer loyalty cards or rewards programs that allow you to earn points or discounts on fuel purchases.

“Some programs with the best value include Sainsbury’s NECTAR card, Shell GO+, BPme and Morrisons More. Sign up for these programs and use them consistently to save money over time.”
