Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle (3-4-2-1)
Andre Onana 6
Slightly more commanding from set-pieces but twice had to pick the ball out of his net.
5 (Antony, 83)
Inaccurate with his passing and looked uncomfortable when put under pressure.
Harry Maguire 6
Managed to stay broadly under the radar on a night when several of his team-mates suffered. Hit the post with a powerful diving header just before the hour mark.
Lisandro Martinez 3 (booked) (Yoro, 64)
Nothing like a captain’s performance from United’s skipper on the night. Dominated in the air for Isak’s opener and again by Joelinton for ‘s second. Amorim can’t allow it to keep happening.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the Magpies
Noussair Mazraoui 3
Didn’t do enough to stop Lewis Hall’s cross coming in for the first goal of the night. Skinned by Anthony Gordon, who had his way with him in the first half an hour. Poor on the ball, surrendering possession too many times.
Christian Eriksen 4
Swarmed by Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali – he and Casemiro did not stand a chance. Moved further forward midway through the second half and he dropped into midfield to help out.
Casemiro 4 (Garnacho, 64)
Was never going to cover the ground he needed to cover. Got given the runaround out of possession and was untidy on the ball. A slight improvement in the second half.
Diogo Dalot 7
Important slide to stop Jacob Murphy early on, and a good cross for Maguire’s header which struck the woodwork. Always game, always willing, even in an unfamiliar position.
Amad Diallo 7
He’s put on more impressive performances this season but still a joy to watch him dribble. Asked questions of as the game wore on.
6
Had a respectable chance and shot wide from a narrow angle in the first half. A couple of decent bits of hold-up play but still doesn’t offer enough threat for £72million.
Joshua Zirkzee: 5 (Mainoo, 33)
Ineffective in the left inside-forward position, which was never going to play to his strengths. Only given half an hour, in his defence, before being sacrificed to change tactics. Jeered off and ran straight down the tunnel before resurfacing minutes later.
Substitutes
Kobbie Mainoo: 7
Nothing spectacular but United improved dramatically with him on the pitch, partly due to tactics but Mainoo helped establish at least some level of control.
Alejandro Garnacho: 6
Quiet cameo from the player tasked with fighting his way back into contention.
Leny Yoro: 6
Should have scored when he popped up unmarked at the near post but the header flashed just wide.
Antony: N/A
A late addition.
