The King has personally recognised senior members of his medical team for their service during his cancer treatment. Dr Douglas Glass, Charles’s GP and the apothecary to the King, along with his physician Professor Richard Leach, have been honoured for their personal service to the monarch and the Royal family.
This comes in the wake of the King and the Princess of Wales’s dual cancer diagnoses this year. Despite continuing his treatment, Charles has resumed almost all of his duties.
Kate is slowly returning to official public engagements after completing her chemotherapy course in the summer. Dr Glass, who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s apothecary and was present at Balmoral when she passed away, was already a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) and has now been promoted to Commander by the King.
The RVO awards are given by the King independently of Downing Street to individuals who have personally served the monarch or the Royal family. Prof Leach, a consultant physician at the private King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust, where he is clinical director for pulmonary and critical care medicine, has been made a Lieutenant of the RVO.
Dame Annabel Whitehead, who served as a lady-in-waiting to the late Queen for approximately two decades until her passing in 2022, was also honoured. She was made a Dame Commander of the RVO.
Following the King’s accession, it was revealed that she would take on the role of a lady of the household, aiding the monarch in hosting formal events at Buckingham Palace. She has been bestowed with the highest honour of the order, the Dame Grand Cross.
