ace Matthew Edgar says his walk-on song at the once got rejected. The 38-year-old, who has qualified for the tournament three times, typically walks out to Buck Rogers by Feeder but tried to change it part-way through the 2021 edition of the competition.

But tournament organisers rejected his request, telling Edgar they didn’t want him “chopping and changing” songs because he wasn’t a particularly well-known player. “I’m going to give you some insight into how it [walk-on songs] works,” he said in a video uploaded to .

“With this, the walk-on, you simply just present your song to the PDC, who’ll present it to the broadcaster. The copyrights, we [the players] don’t worry about that too much. That’s to do with the lisencing in the arena and that’s something we don’t have to think about as a player, we just suggest what we’d like to use.

“I suggested Buck Rogers [by] Feeder. Great song… now I’ve never really known of a player getting their song choice rejected before – but mine was rejected for a reason.

“Mine came in the second round [of the 2021 World Darts Championship]. I’d won the first game against Maik Kuivenhoven and I was playing Mensur Suljovic in round two.

“I was wearing a Hulk Hogan-inspired shirt. I wanted to come on giving it all the Hulk Hogan stuff, start ‘Hulking up’, and I wanted to use Hulk Hogan’s [theme song] ‘Real American’, [but] it was rejected.

“And the reason it was rejected is because of familiarity,” he explained. “They wanted people to get familiar with the song that I was using at the time, and not be chopping and changing throughout [the tournament].”

Despite having his request turned down, Edgar still decided to don Hulk Hogan colours as he took to the stage at Alexandra Palace for his first-ever second-round tie at the tournament. But he couldn’t overcome Suljovic, who clinched a comprehensive 3-1 victory.

It was just as well, considering the fact that two-time champion Gary Anderson – who would go on to reach the final that year – was waiting for him in the third round. That said, Edgar’s clash with Suljovic is, to date, his last at the world championship.

He returned to Q-School in early 2022 in a bid to retain his Tour Card but was knocked out by Nathan Rafferty in the semi-finals. This meant he finished just outside the Tour Card spots in the Q-School order of merit.

In the two years since, he’s clinched two ranking WDF titles. However, he has yet to earn his way back onto the PDC tour.
