The farmer, Ramnaresh Dubey, stumbled across the two valuable stones – one weighing an astonishing 8.30 carats – in his field in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Mr Dubey took the diamonds to be assessed by Indian government officials, who valued them together at US$46,841 (£37,261).

Videos show the gleaming diamonds displayed on a tray at the diamond office, with Mr Dubey – who had been mining for diamonds for over six months – also seen holding the two sparkling jewels in another clip.

However, officials claimed both of the farmer’s diamonds were off-colour, decreasing their market value.

One weighs 0.94 carats, and the other is 8.30 carats.

Ramnaresh, a resident of a village called Ramkhiriya in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, had obtained permission to mine diamonds on his farmland.

For the past six months, he has been working on a shallow mine – but his luck finally paid out with his remarkable find.

Ramnaresh intends to use the proceeds from the diamonds to buy land and open a shop whilst continuing to mine for more diamonds.

Diamond officer Ravi Patel confirmed that the diamonds would be auctioned in an upcoming sale, with a royalty fee of 11.5 per cent deducted from profits.
