British Gas customers have been warned to check their meter
Energy giant British Gas has warned customers that they need to submit a meter reading before Wednesday.
The supplier has issued a message to all customers via its website urging them to take action before New Year’s Day.
That’s because energy regulator is raising its price cap on January 1, so anyone who isn’t currently on a fixed tariff deal will be facing a price rise for 2025.
:
The average cost of gas and will increase by 1.2% from January 1, raising bills from £1,717 to £1,738 for a typical household.
Of course, typical household is just an illustrative figure, and if you use twice as much as a typical home, you’ll pay twice the price cap amount.
The price cap has risen 11.2% since October, as Ofgem already raised prices by 10% on October 1.
is now urging customers to take a meter reading before the price cap takes effect.
This is to ensure that you aren’t incorrectly charged for energy you used in December priced at the higher January rates.
said: “It’s time to submit a meter reading
“The price cap is increasing on 1st January. If you’re on a variable tariff you’ll need to submit a meter reading to make sure you’re paying the right amount for your energy.
“Why not get a fixed tariff now and beat the price cap.
“If you’re on or choose a variable tariff, your energy prices will increase from 1st January 2025. We’ll be in touch to let you know your rates and your new estimated annual energy costs.
“Only variable rates are changing, so check our fixed tariffs and get protected against price rises. And, if we bring out an even better fixed tariff later – you can swap for free.”
As advises, customers who swap to a fixed tariff now can beat the price cap by fixing at a cheaper rate – but will need to act by Wednesday, January 1.
