Bin collection dates warning as New Year changes put in place across England

Households across England and Wales are being warned about bin collection changes between Christmas and New Year.

Whether a traditional , cities and councils up and down the country will be changing bin collection dates between Christmas and the first few days of 2025 – while strikes will also affect some parts of the UK too.

Several local authorities have already published their bin collection changed dates and advised households not to put bins out too early on the wrong dates as a result.

Buckhinghamshire Council said collections due on December 30 would be taken on December 31, while New Year’s Day bins would be taken on January 3 instead.

January 2 bins would then be collected on January 4, with one to two day delays through to January 11.

In Leeds, bin days have also been delayed 1-2 days, while in Bolton, bin collections have been delayed by up to six days.

In the London Borough of Greenwhich, bins are being delayed by one day past your normal collection date from January 1 through to January 4.

Refuse collectors are to strike in the new year in a dispute over pay in Birmingham.

Members of Unite in will launch a series of strikes from January 6 and ban overtime from January 2, which the union said will cause “considerable disruption.”

Unite said 150 workers face losing £8,000 a year because of the abolition of a waste recycling and collection officer role.

Unite named strike dates as January 6, 14, 22, 30, February 7, 10,18, 26, March 6, 14, 25, and April 2.

Because bin collections and recycling is a devolved issue, every council across England and Wales may have different rules and collection plans around Christmas and New Year.
