The massive £2bn airport which is the world’s biggest with one terminal you can’t use

Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd International Airport holds the crown for the world’s biggest airport,

But there’s one side of the airport few travellers will ever get to see. Terminal 1 has a specific function: it’s reserved exclusively for VIPs, government officials and members of the Saudi Royal Family.

With only two terminals currently in operation, it’s a wonder that one is completely sealed off to members of the public.

Inside Terminal 1 you can find lounges for premium passengers, banks on the arrivals level, spas and salons (because traveling in style is a must), an array of well-known fast food chains and restaurants such as McDonald’s, KFC, and Subway,

while still maintaining the authenticity of the country’s own cuisine, like the ‘Najd Village’ offering traditional Saudi cuisine and providing an authentic taste of the region with dishes like kabsa, kebabs, and other local favorites.

As well as this, there’s also a mosque with a capacity of 2,000 worshippers.

With 10 million passengers currently passing through each year and a capacity of 26 million, the airport has ambitious plans to expand. 

As part of a multi-million-pound revamp, a new state-of-the-art terminal will be built to accommodate growing passenger numbers and improve overall airport experience.

The expansion will include additional gates, more retail and dining options, enhanced passenger services, and modernised baggage handling systems. 

This project is aimed at improving operational efficiency, reducing congestion, and positioning the airport as a leading international hub in the region.

The practice of having a separate terminal for royalty and high-ranking officials is not unique to Saudi Arabia. Many other countries with royal families or government figures requiring special treatment employ similar measures.

Ultimately, Terminal 1 at King Fahd International Airport remains a haven for VIPs, royals, and dignitaries, with strict access control. It is not open to the general public, and access is limited to those with special clearance.
