Rob Burrow’s heartbreaking final message before tragic death

shared a final message before his death as he urged people not to “waste a moment” of their lives. The former Leeds Rhino star, who died earlier this year, delivered a candid speech recorded for documentary There’s Only One .

The rugby legend poignantly asked for the message to be shared after his death in June.

Burrow said he hoped there would one day be a cure for the degenerative condition.

“My final message to you is whatever your personal battle be brave and face it,” he said. “In a world full of adversity we must still dare to dream.”

Burrow’s (MND) diagnosis came in 2019 just two years after he retired from playing, with his 17-year career with the Rhinos and Great Britain including eight Super League Grand Final wins, three World Club Challenges and two Challenge Cups.

The sports star’s funeral took place at Pontefract Crematorium, in a private service, however members of the public had been invited to line the route of the funeral cortege.

In less than five years following his diagnosis, he and his friend and former teammate raised more than £15m for MND charities.

Burrow was made an MBE in the 2021 New Year Honours for his services to rugby league and the MND community, and was promoted to a CBE in the New Year Honours in 2024.

The father of three died at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

His wife Lindsey Burrow called him “simply the best” and said he was “our hero”.

“Although we knew this day would arrive, I am somehow still feeling at a loss for words that our loving, kind and caring husband and father has departed,” she said in a heartfelt statement

“However, we take comfort from how much people’s love and continued support meant to Rob through his most vulnerable times.”
