Mohamed Salah admits there still has not been much progress towards a new Liverpool contract
admits there has still been no significant progress towards him signing a new contract despite continuing his sensational form with another man-of-the-match performance for the Reds.
Salah scored and added two assists in at the London Stadium. It leaves the 32-year-old winger on an astounding 17 goals and 13 assists from 18 matches this season.
His form has been pivotal in putting ‘s side at least temporarily eight points clear at the summit of the table and in pole position to lift the club’s 20th league title in May.
But the Egyptian is out of contract next summer and offered a concerning update in conversation with Sky Sports’ Patrick Davison at the London Stadium.
Asked about the possibility of a new deal, Salah replied: “We are far away from that. Again I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff. But nothing has really moved on. Now I’m focused with the team and hopefully we win the .”
Despite this being his eighth season at Anfield, Salah remains as deadly as ever. He is currently averaging a goal or an assist every 50 minutes in the league.
The Egyptian added: “I’m glad about the result. We managed to score early and dominated the game very well. That’s the most important thing. The only thing in my mind is that I want to win the league and I want to be part of it.
“That is the only thing I have focused on. I will do my best to win the trophy. We are in the right direction but there are other teams trying to catch up with us. We just need to stay humble and go again.
“I am just trying to enjoy the game. I was a bit disappointed with some of the shots I missed today but I came here for the result. I am always hungry for more. Hopefully next time I will score more but the most important is that the team won.”
Former midfielder Jamie Redknapp stressed how vital it is that Salah is tied down to a fresh contract in the coming months – and expects him to sign one.
Mohamed Salah was brilliant as Liverpool thrashed West Ham
The Sky Sports pundit said post-match: “Salah’s numbers right now are as good as when he first came to and that’s absolutely frightening.
“I understand ‘s position. He’s 33 in June so how long do they give him? Right now, he looks like he could play for the next four years, but you just don’t know. Some players reach the peak and then start to drop off.
“You think of two players who signed big contracts in (Mesut) Ozil and (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang. But I don’t see that with these three players. They’re so hungry, so effective, so good at what they do and it’s playing into ‘s hands.
“I think Salah will end up signing a contract. They’ll have to find some middle ground on what they want because he will want the top money, but will be nervous about his age and not giving him too long of a deal.
“But because he’s playing so well, he’s almost forced that issue for to have to give him what he wants.”
