An ancient town and port on the is nestled two miles downstream from Canterbury, housing the smallest population in Britain.
The historic town of Fordwich dates back to 675AD, with King Henry II granting it a Merchant Gild Charter in 1184, however, the population has never risen upwards of a few hundred.
The small community lies near the city of , Kent. It has increased its population by just a mere 30 people between 2001 and 2011 – a tiny amount but the equivalent of just over 10 percent of the town’s total population.
The latest census found that 381 people live within the town’s boundaries, a local populace that has barely grown since it was first listed as a community.

The beautiful village is worth visiting thants to its wonderful historic buildings, many of them timber-framed, including the Town Hall.
Although not confirmed, the hall is thought to be the country’s smallest too, residing next to the Fordwich Arms pub on the riverbank.
The town is also known for its scenic riverside walks. The signposted famous Stour Valley Walk leads along the Stour from Canterbury to Fordwich, a distance of about two miles.
The river also offers various water activities for tourists to do which includes ‘Canoe Wild’. Here visit rent kayaks and canoes out, paddling down the Great Stour River to spot wildlife in the woodlands.

Fordwich holds great historic significance with the parish church of St Mary holding the mysterious Fordwich Stone. This is a solid block of limestone perfectly carved to resemble a tomb. Although there is a lack of evidence, tradition says that the stone formed part of the shrine that stood over the relics of St Augustine in Canterbury Cathedral.
Fordwich is easily reachable within a day of travelling from London. For those seeking a quick day trip away from the city, the town is just 75 minutes away by car. Alternatively, the train from King’s Cross station will take you into Ashford where you change, taking a total journey time of 90 minutes.
