The UK town set to be transformed by incredible £16.3m revamp of popular train station

An exciting £16.3 million revamp of a town’s popular railway station is set to regenerate an area once at the centre of a row .

Eaglescliffe railway station is undergoing a huge transformation which could bring in huge opportunities for more than 80,000 local people in the town of Stockton-on-Tees.

The train hub is situated in a which it was claimed was once called a rude name by then Home Secretary . Mr Cleverly has denied he called the town a “s***hole” during a debate in Parliament last year.

Network Rail and the Tees Valley Combined Authority have both put forward millions to improve the train hub at Eaglescliffe, which will now run a TransPennine Express service between nearby Redcar and Manchester Airport for the first time.

The multi-million-pound project will also see accessibility at the station vastly improved with the installation of a new footbridge, with lifts added for the first time.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen told the the revamped station, which is due to be fully completed next year, will be a major boost for the region.

He said: “Eaglescliffe can now add Manchester to its London link but it’s vitally important we sort out access once and for all.

“Getting to the far side of the station has been far too difficult for many people, and we’re making sure using it becomes quicker and easier for everyone.”

Improved station facilities, such as new waiting areas and taxi office, are also being added as part of the project. The scheme is designed to improve the experience of passengers and make it easier to use as they travel by train.

The car park and wider cycle improvements linking to and from the station are being funded by the Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and the Levelling Up Fund allocation for Stockton South respectively, secured by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.

Bob Cook, leader of the Labour-led council, said: “The improved transport links and accessibility is great for the area as it will play a key role in helping attract more businesses to Eaglescliffe.”

Anna Weeks, Principal Programme Sponsor for Network Rail’s North & East route, said the improvements to the station were a major “milestone” for the area.

She said: “We want to make sure that every passenger can travel freely and easily by train and these upgrades will allow passengers to be able to do that.

“It’s great that we can work together with our partners at the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council on this project to deliver a better passenger experience for people in the region.”

Stockton-on-Tees lies is in the Teesside region and the Tees Valley, historically the town was a port town and large ships were able to navigate up the River Tees after it was straightened in the 19th century.
