While much of the country enjoys the lull between Christmas and New Year, some parts of Britain could experience torrid weather.

According to WX Charts, the north of Scotland could experience freezing temperatures, flurries, and even freezing rain.

The online forecaster predicts that from midnight on December 30 through to around 3 a.m. on December 31, frosty conditions could grip Scotland from the Highlands, the country’s northernmost Region, towards the Central Belt.

The snowfall is expected to start in and around Inverness as December 29 becomes December 30. Then, the area affected is predicted to swell, including all of the Highlands and areas like Aberdeen.

Although Edinburgh and Glasgow are just outside of the area forecast for snow, the prediction is subject to change, so residents in the two major cities may see a dusting at least.

Then, around midnight on December 31, a huge area of Scotland may see freezing rain. Locals will be advised to steer clear of the inclement weather from the Highlands down into the Central Belt.

What is freezing rain?

According to the : “Freezing rain is a rare type of liquid precipitation that strikes a cold surface, and freezes almost instantly.

“The conditions needed for freezing rain are quite specific, and we don’t see this phenomenon very often in the UK. It can produce striking effects, as the raindrop spreads out momentarily across the surface before it freezes, encasing the surface in a layer of clear ice.”
