There’s a reason why many Brits visiting the USA often dislike their bread
A reviewer from the United States has highlighted the differences between supermarket bread from the UK and the US.
Kalani Smith, also known as on social media, conducted a comparison of bread in the UK and the US, with astonishing results. He pitted a loaf of Warburtons, a popular British brand, against a loaf of Wonder Bread, a well-known American brand, and discovered a big disparity in their sugar content.
Kalani’s investigation revealed that a standard-sized loaf of Warburtons contains 17g of sugar, whereas the same-sized loaf of Wonder bread packs a staggering 50g of sugar. He shared his findings in a video on , expressing his concern and labelling the difference a “significant problem.”
In the video, Kalani displayed two jars representing the sugar content of each loaf, highlighting the substantial gap between the two.
He remarked: “I think Americans need to be very concerned. What I have in front of me is the difference in the amount of sugar in loaves of bread between the UK and the USA.”
Kalani recalled that many people from the UK had told him they found American bread too sweet, likening it to cake, which prompted him to investigate further. Upon returning to the US, he brought a loaf of UK bread for comparison, and the difference in sugar content was stark.
Kalani explained that the disparity is an important health issue, as Americans may not be aware of just how much sugar they’re consuming. He also put his palate to the test to see if he could distinguish between Warburtons and Wonder Bread on taste.
With his eyes shut, he tasted samples of both brands and confidently declared: “Oh the first one’s definitely US. It’s not even close. Oh my gosh.”
The American content creator also noticed the smaller size of Wonder bread slices compared to Warburtons, but with a noticeably higher sugar content. He expressed concern over the issue saying, “there is a significant problem in the US because there is so much sugar in everything.”
Americans may not realise that their bread often has a high sugar content
His revealing video titled ‘This is scary about USA bread’ has attracted widespread attention, amassing 380,000 views, 20,000 likes, and an influx of comments exceeding 1,000. In a popular reaction garnering 3,734 likes, one user commented: “US bread looks like Madeira cake”.
Others chimed in with their dismay at the sweetness of the bread stateside, with remarks like, “My friend and I went to the US. We could not eat the bread. It was so sweet! Yuk” and claims were made that “Most bread in America is legally classified as cake due to sugar levels. Subway in America can’t call it bread because it’s legally cake.”
Many shared their experiences dining in America: “That’s the one thing I noticed in the USA. Everything was so sugary!” and “Every breakfast I ate in America tasted like dessert, even the fry ups.”
Kalani has become known for his food comparison videos, including another where his grandma compares .
