Netflix subscribers are rejoicing as one of the streamer’s biggest and best dramas has finally returned with a second season.
This riveting international drama came out of nowhere back in 2021, quickly becoming not only the streamer’s biggest show of that year but also their most-watched show of all time.
Three years later, the smash-hit from South Korea is still their top series and is now hoping to score similar success with season two.
Following a downtrodden gambling addict who makes a desperate decision to win a huge cash prize, Squid Game takes viewers on a blood-soaked journey through a ruthless series of horrifying challenges.
It scored rave reviews with its first season, with Empire writing at the time, “Its messages hit like a sledgehammer to the head, yet this vibrant, vicious series holds a surprisingly big heart at its core. A winning blend of spectacle and sentiment.”
‘One of the best shows on TV right now’ finally returns for season 2
And one viewer said on : “Squid Game is probably the best show I came across in a long time. The only show that hit me as hard as Breaking Bad did, and trust me I watched a lot of shows in between. I highly encourage y’all to watch it if you haven’t already.”
But has season two lived up to expectations? Anticipatory fans will be pleased to know that most reviews so far have been favourable, praising the additional twists and turns in the next chapter of Seong Gi-hun’s (played by Lee Jung-jae) journey.
GamesRadar gave the follow-up a whopping five stars, writing Squid Game’s return “secures its place as one of the best shows on television right now”.
Their write-up continued: “Just as shocking and unrelenting as its first season, Squid Game makes a triumphant return to secure its place as one of the best shows on television right now.
Netflix’s most-watched show ever is back with a vengeance
“Lee Jung-jae leads the cast brilliantly as the haunted Gi-hun who meets his match in Lee Byung-hun’s terrifying Front Man.”
Variety was in agreement, calling the second outing “bloodier, more expansive and utterly engaging”.
“Boasting several mind-blowing twists, these seven episodes advance the story to what will undoubtedly be an electric conclusion when season three debuts in 2025,” they added.
Empire also gave the new season high praise, asserting that season two contains “what may be the best episode of Squid Game ever made”.
A whole new roster of players join the games in season two
The review continues: “It feels like a perfect microcosm of all the show’s best elements: nauseatingly tense, blackly hilarious, cartoonishly ridiculous and utterly devastating.”
And IGN promises Squid Game season two “still finds thrills and a strong, complex perspective in its long-awaited return.
“Squid Game finds its second wind by exploring the complex layers of a deadly system.
“Storytelling continues to be the series’ strongest asset, and a leaner season helps to focus energy on a more nuanced approach to this expanding fictional universe.”
