Rob Brydon as Bryn, and James Corden as Smith
Rob Brydon has candidly expressed his sentiments regarding Gavin and Stacey’s co-creator James Corden as fans eagerly await the show’s grand finale on Christmas Day.
The beloved comedy is set to conclude with a 90-minute special this Christmas, picking up from the dramatic 2019 festive episode cliffhanger where Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins, portrayed by Ruth Jones, popped the question to Corden’s Neil “Smithy” Smith.
Gavin and Stacey, which chronicles the romance of a couple from Essex and Wales, enjoyed three successful seasons from 2007 to 2010 and treated viewers to a Christmas special in 2008.
Since co-developing the series with Jones, Corden’s career has soared. The 46-year-old entertainer has graced the stage and screen in musicals such as Into The Woods and Cats, and shone in the National Theatre’s One Man, Two Guvnors, which saw him snag a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play after its move from the West End to Broadway.
But it’s his ascension to American TV fame that stands out, having taken the reins of The Late Late Show in 2015. There, he launched the wildly popular ‘Carpool Karaoke’ segment, hosting a parade of stars like Adele, Sir , Mariah Carey, Harry Styles, and Stevie Wonder for sing-alongs that have become a global sensation, reports .

Rob Brydon, Welsh star of Gavin and Stacey, has voiced his opinion that despite his success in the US, his fellow actor James Corden doesn’t receive the recognition he deserves on home turf. On Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, aired on December 23, Brydon praised Corden’s unique achievements: “It’s unprecedented”, he exclaimed.
Reflecting on the emotional last days on the Gavin and Stacey set, Rob recounted: “I thought it would feel emotional on the last day, which indeed it did, floods of tears. But, anytime we were doing a sort of communal scene, where there’s a bunch of us, I would sit there and I’d look and I’d see Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb.”
He continued with admiration: “I’d see Ruth and I’d see James, and I would think ‘wow, I have lived this experience with these people and it’s been 20 years since it began and we’ve all grown and changed.”
Brydon highlighted Corden’s stateside triumph: “We’ve all gone and done our different things. James I suppose most most notably he went off and conquered America which he doesn’t get the praise for that he deserves. Unprecedented, I mean, who else has done that?”
