This year’s from marks a significant departure from tradition, as the monarch has chosen to deliver his message from the in London.
This a small, hidden gem steeped in history and has community significance. The decision comes at the end of a momentous royal year for the King, reflecting both personal and societal challenges that have shaped 2024.
Royal commentator Robert Hardman said by selecting this venue, King Charles showed themes of resilience, care, and unity.
Mr Hardman wrote in: “Although the King had never visited the place prior to recording his broadcast, he was instantly struck by photographs of an interior which took 25 years to complete and which has been acclaimed as one of London’s hidden architectural gems.
“The King also wanted somewhere with a strong community role, in keeping with what is expected to be one of the main themes of this year’s broadcast.”
Mr Hardman also pointed out that the King would also avoid speculation about family rifts by avoiding sitting in a room in his own home.
He added: “By avoiding a royal desk or sitting room, the King has also avoided any micro-analysis of whichever royal photographs and portraits are in shot, and thus hinting at who is (or is not) in royal favour.

The Fitzrovia Chapel, nestled behind a modern office block in London’s West End, stands as the sole remnant of the Middlesex Hospital.
Though modest and almost unassuming from the outside, its interior boasts breathtaking marble and mosaic craftsmanship, reminiscent of Byzantine church architecture.
Historically, the chapel provided solace to medical staff, patients, and their families, making it an apt choice for a year shadowed by medical hardships, including cancer diagnoses for both the King and the Princess of Wales.
The chapel, no longer a regular place of worship, survives on community-focused events and serves as a poignant symbol of healing and togetherness.
The King’s speech, which currently remains under wraps, is anticipated to focus on community cohesion, a theme resonating deeply after a year marked by national unrest, including riots following the tragic Southport murders.
The Fitzrovia Chapel’s legacy as a space for inclusivity and cultural engagement aligns seamlessly with this message.

The choice also reflects King Charles’s dedication to modernising the monarchy and connecting with the public.
By opting for a setting rich in communal history rather than the opulence of a royal residence, the King aims to foster a sense of shared experience and mutual support.
This isn’t the first time a monarch has stepped away from tradition for the Christmas message.
Queen Elizabeth II occasionally chose locations with thematic significance, such as Southwark Cathedral in 2006 or Combermere Barracks in 2003 to honor military service.
By following in her footsteps, King Charles adds his unique touch while reinforcing his commitment to meaningful symbolism.
