Cameron Diaz and Jude Law’s characters met in Surrey, England
After seeing Jude Law reenact his famous Mr Napkin Head character from film The Holiday last week, I suddenly had an urge to watch the iconic festive film.
I first watched it on a sleepover while I was at primary school, and have revisited it probably five times since, with the film firmly cemented as one of my holiday favourites.
But I admit I haven’t indulged in the schmaltzy movie for a few years, and so when I settled down to put it on TV last weekend, I realised I missed one major unanswered question.
I always thought the ending, where Cameron Diaz and Jude Law’s characters (Amanda and Graham), and the couple played by Jack Black and Kate Winslet (Miles and Iris) end up spending New Year’s Eve together, was just a sweet way to tie the film up.
But one thing hit me the other day. How did either of the couples make their relationships work? We just see the four of them, along with Graham’s two daughters, celebrating and dancing in the living room.
The Holiday’s Amanda grew close to Graham’s kids within days
There is absolutely no explanation about the logistics of their arrangement, and how they all managed to book time off work and fly across the world within days of meeting each other.
The film offered no real conclusion to Amanda and Graham’s long-distance relationship dilemma, as she rushed back to declare her love for him, seemingly forgetting all about her home, career and responsibilities in LA.
Also, don’t get me started on the fact the car, unable to get down the lane to bring Amanda to the cottage as she was arriving, suddenly managed to do a U-turn as she was leaving to return to LA.
Iris and Miles had no chemistry together whatsoever
It was a sweet ending, but one that left me annoyed, as realistically, both couples would’ve ended up going their separate ways – especially Iris and Miles, who, let’s face it, had the chemistry of two cold potatoes.
And it seems it’s not just me who thinks it, as after furiously searching through X to find other people to back me up, I stumbled across many pleas for answers.
One person said: “#theholiday needs a sequel. Did Amanda stay in London? Did they try a long distance relationship ? Did they get married have kids?? Did iris locate back to LA? So many questions need answering.”
Don’t miss… [PICTURED] [EXPLAINED]
Another added: “Anybody ever wondered what happened to the iris and amanda after they went back to their respective homes?”
A third chimed in: “So did Graham & Amanda woods ever have a long distance relationship??? I need to know…”
A fourth agreed: “OK I really need “The Holiday” to do a reunion Christmas special to find out how everyone made these long-distance relationships work!”
So it seems there is only one sensible solution to calm down my fury – we need a Holiday sequel immediately.
