Traffic alert: Oak and West Pender disruptions end after infrastructure upgrades

Regular traffic flows on key commuter routes near the Oak Street Bridge and in the downtown area have been restored

Two major traffic bottlenecks in Vancouver have been cleared after sewer and water main work wrapped up this month.

The infrastructure upgrades included new sewer pipes in the area of Oak Street and West 70th Avenue and water pipes on key downtown commuter West Pender Street.

Lane closures and other disruptions were a regular occurrence at Oak Street, West 70th and Fremlin Street during three phases of the project that launched in October 2023. Traffic along the vital north-south corridor leading to the Oak Street Bridge was regularly disrupted at times during the work.

The new Oak Street infrastructure, which cost $28.5 million, will serve residents and businesses on the growing Cambie corridor and make the system handle more intense rainfall.

The $5.4 million West Pender project replaced water mains that had reached their useful service life. A second phase of the upgrades between Bute and Cardero streets will happen in the coming years for a total of a kilometre of new water pipes.

All access to businesses, sidewalks and traffic lanes on West Pender has been restored.

Crews will return in spring to do permanent street repaving in both locations.
