Whether you’re expanding your smart home setup or you’re dipping your toes in the experience, Amazon’s Echo range is a great choice. The are a particularly good option, offering great sound and tons of smart speaker features at a reasonable price.

That price is even more reasonable right now, with the from £44.99 (price correct at time of writing). Available in charcoal or lavender, these sleek little gadgets will fit subtly into most homes – plus, you can save 25% if you trade in an existing Echo device.

These speakers only start listening to you when you say ‘Alexa’, at which point a blue light with come on to show you the speaker is waiting for commands. From there you can use voice commands to control any smart device attached to your smart home ecosystem, as well as make use of the speaker’s music and podcast playback functions.

Compatible with Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and more, you can also connect your smartphone to easily switch playback between your phone and your speakers. As with other Echo devices, this nifty little speaker also serves as a Wi-Fi extender.

Others haven’t been so impressed with the sound quality, however. “I bought this specifically as Amazon advertised it as ‘full sound’. but it’s disappointingly tinny with very little bass. The mids are okay but the treble is really flat,” said one review. Another noted some connectivity issues: “One of the speakers kept disconnecting, and the sound quality got really bad.”

The other big name in smart homes is Google, and you can grab the equivalent  at Currys. If you just need a speaker without extra bells and whistles, the  (down from £129) will offer exceptional sound quality.
