The brand manager at has revealed a clever hack involving vodka that costs just 9p per use and helps extend the life of the .

are known for their bright red and green foliage, but they can quickly lose their vibrancy if not cared for properly. According to Harlock, adding a small amount of vodka to the plant’s water can slow down the ageing process.

“Vodka reduces the production of ethylene, a natural plant hormone that causes leaves and flowers to drop prematurely,” Elise explained.

“By slowing this process, you’re helping your poinsettia stay fresh and beautiful for longer.”

For this hack, mix one teaspoon of vodka with two pints of water. Use the solution once a week to water your poinsettia.

However, Harlock cautions against using too much alcohol, as it could harm the plant.

“The ratio is important. A little vodka goes a long way, and you’ll see a noticeable difference in how your poinsettia holds its colour and leaves,” she said.

While the vodka solution is effective, Elise emphasises the importance of general poinsettia care to maximize its benefits.

“Poinsettias thrive in bright, indirect light and stable temperatures between 18C and 24C,” she said. “Avoid drafts, heaters, or fluctuating temperatures, which can cause stress and lead to leaf drop.”

The hack is not only effective but also budget-friendly. With a litre of vodka costing £17 at Tesco, the cost per use comes to just 9p.
