Coronation Street legend was almost cast in leading role Bridget Jones’s Diary movie

favourite Colson Smith has revealed he was almost cast in a major rom-com.

Earlier this month, the fiery redhead – who joined the soap at the age of 13 – lifted the lid on his early acting career on his joint podcast with co-stars Jack P. Shepherd and Ben Price.

The Craig Tinker star explained that before he landed a role on the long-running show, he was in the running to star in a Bridget Jones movie.

He explained to his colleagues that the third movie, Briget Jones’s Baby, was due to hit theatres back in the late noughties, however the film was ultimately shelved.

But before they decided to put the rom-com on hold, the former Big Brother star had landed a leading role in the movie.

He told listeners: “Did you know at one point there was a film called Bridget Jones’s baby and the initial script was that Bridget had a child.”

Jack cheekily asked: “A ginger kid?” to which he replied: “Bridget had a child that was 10 years old and she went to find out which one of the two dads it was going to be.”

He claimed: “It got knocked back by one of the boys but that child was going to be me.” Unconvinced, Ben asked: “How do you know it was going to be you?”

Colson explained: “Because I had casted for it. I’d had three auditions, there’d been chats, and then it went quiet, and then it was, ‘This script’s been turned down. We’re rewriting, we’ll be in touch’.”

Jack quizzed: “So, they cast you and went, ‘We can’t make a film with him, he’s awkward. Just change the whole script. We’re you at the top of the poster?”

The actor chuckled: “The premise was, she had a kid that no one wanted to take responsibility for because he was f***ing fat and ugly, and I was meant to be said child.”

The star-studded movie was later recast in 2016, starring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey. Meanwhile, the Manchester native went on to land a role in the ITV soap two years later.
