The world’s 10 largest islands have been revealed and three are in the same country.

The largest island in the world is Greenland, which is 822,700 square miles. It’s in the Atlantic and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Next is New Guinea, in Melanesia in the Pacific. It is significantly smaller at 303,381 square miles. The island is split between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

In third is Borneo, the largest island in Asia and the only island shared by three UN member states. It is 288,869 square miles and split by Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Madagascar comes in fourth as the largest island in Africa, off the southeast coast of the continent in the Indian Ocean at 226,658 square miles.

Fifth is Baffin Island – it is one of three Canadian islands that make the top ten. It is 195,928 square miles, the largest island in the Arctic Archipelago and the second-largest island in the Americas.

Also in Canada is eighth place, Victoria Island, and tenth place, Ellesmere Island. Victoria Island is 83,897 square miles and Ellesmere Island is 75,767 square miles.

Victoria Island is named for Queen Victoria and sits off the north coast of Canada. Ellesmere is Canada’s northernmost island and had a population of just 144 in 2021.
