Holidaymakers are spoiled for choice when it comes to city breaks in Europe.
However, there aren’t many cities that also offer you the chance to explore a 21-island archipelago.
But that is exactly what is on offer
The 168-mile Stockholm Archipelago Trail is renowned as one of the world’s first footpaths to connect the islands, and it only opened in October 2024.
The route takes visitors all the way from the northernmost Arholma right down to Öja in the south.

In total, there are 30,000 mini-islands in the archipelago.
Some islands, such as Finnham, offer spectacular views, a forest, and hotels and restaurants.
Meanwhile, Grinda is popular thanks to its sandy beaches and a stunning sauna that looks over the Saxarfjärden bay.
Sandhamm is the most developed island with its hotels, restaurants, and port. As well as beaches, visitors can also explore the pine forest there.
The islands of Utö and Alö are connected by a bridge and has something to offer for history enthusiasts. Utö was invaded by in the 18th century.

According to locals, Nåtarö is home to the best beaches out of all of the islands, and it is also close to the mainland.
The Stockholm Archipelago Trail even made National Geographic’s Best of the World List for 2025 – a list of the world’s best travel destinations.
Marie Östblom, Manager of Stockholm Archipelago at Stockholm Business Region, said: “We are delighted and grateful to be included in National Geographic Traveler’s list of the world’s best destinations for 2025.
“As a destination, we have intentionally focused on attracting visitors who appreciate nature and seek to experience the Archipelago during our Magic Season.
“This recognition confirms that our strategy has been successful.”
