star Gordon Mathers stunned fans at this week having undergone an incredible body transformation. The Australian made his first appearance at the in three years on Wednesday (December 18) as he took on Ricky Evans in the first round.

Mathers narrowly lost 3-2, ending his hopes of finally securing a long-awaited victory at the tournament. But despite the setback, his appearance left a lasting impression on supporters, both in-house and online.

The 43-year-old cut an impressively trim figure on stage, having lost a whopping 50kg in recent months. He’d previously ballooned up to 160kg, but has since dipped down to 110kg.

Fans leaped onto social media to lavish the Brisbane-born star with praise. One person wrote: “One of the most impressive body transformations I’ve ever seen from anyone by Gordon Mathers. Incredible.”

Another said: “Some transformation by Gordon Mathers. The man is in shape!” A third added: “Gordon Mathers’ weight loss is remarkable.” While a fourth wrote: “Can’t praise the Gordon Mathers weight loss enough. More impressive than a nine-darter in my opinion.”

Earlier this year, Mathers explained that he was inspired to get healthy after losing his father at just 57 to heart failure. “I’ve always been big but when I got a tour card I stopped working and the lifestyle of a darts player isn’t the best,” he said on the .

“You are eating at the wrong time of the night because you have to. There is nothing else open so it is all junk food. So I blew out really badly until I came back to Australia,” he added.

“My kids were the catalyst to lose the weight because my father passed away at the age of 57 with heart failure. So they were always into me ‘you’re going like big pop’, and then my brother actually played in the inaugural World Series with me back in 2013.

“He had the weight loss surgery, and I saw him go through it, so in March, I touched the weight of 160kg, and I just made the decision that the time was right. I’m down at the moment to 110kg, so 50kg that I have lost in six or seven months and I would do it again tomorrow.”

Mathers’ year may have ended in heartbreak at Ally Pally, but away from the oche, he’s achieved a far greater victory – transforming his health and fitness, and proving himself a champion of life. As for Evans, he’ll face World No. 6 Dave Chisnall in the second round, and victory there would set up a clash with qualifier Robert Owen, who beat Niels Zonneveld and Gabriel Clemens to book his place in the third round.

After edging past Mathers, Evans who called him “s***” and “fat”. He wrote: “Big thanks to all the muppets saying I’m poo at darts and fat haha.

“I’m still in the world champs… and you’re watching me on your tv haha,” he added, along with five heart-eyes emojis.
