A motoring expert has urged all drivers planning to travel to follow four rules that can help to keep them safe and .

With just days away, a report from the and predicts that the will be made this weekend as families head to other parts of the country to see loved ones.

To prevent accidents, Michael Foote, founder of the price comparison service , has urged all motorists to make sure they are prepared for any issues, particularly surrounding safety.

He advised: “Christmas journeys can be unpredictable, with bad weather and heavy traffic adding to the challenge.

“Ensuring that kids are securely fastened and pets are properly restrained can save lives and keep everyone safe.”

In particular, Quote Goat recommended that motorists travelling with young children make sure that they are both comfortable and safe for the long journeys.

Those under 12 years old or less than 135cm in height must have an apropriate child’s seat, which can offer more restraint in the event of a crash, often featuring their own belts and the ability to be attached to the vehicle’s ISOFIX points.

Similarly, pets must be kept secured, either by a pet harness, cage, or carrier in order to prevent the furry friend suddenly jumping out and causing a distraction, something that could ulitmately result in fines of up to £5,000.

When preparing to make the journey, drivers were also urged by Quote Goat to make sure that they have brought everything they need with them.

This includes an emergency breakdown kit, including items such as a spare change of clothing for all occupants, a first-aid kit, torch, and non-perishable food and drink.

Making sure that younger occupants have enough to keep them entertained for lengthy journeys can also help to reduce the strain of a long trip.

Finally, the company stressed the importance that maintaining the temperature inside the vehicle can have in keeping everyone inside the car happy.

Whilst it may seem trivial, travelling inside a vehicle that is either too hot or too cold can leave a driver feeling distracted, often resulting in longer reaction times and drowsiness.

If it is available, multi-zone heating controls are the ideal way for all passengers to choose the right temperature for them without any arguements.
