Marcus Rashford has had a turbulent last few years at Man Utd
was left out of the matchday squad for the second game running on Thursday night.
The boyhood Red Devil will reportedly be put up for sale during the January transfer window, and he himself has acknowledged that it could be time to pursue a new challenge.
Since breaking into the United first team as a fresh-faced teenager in 2015, Rashford has become one of the most recognisable athletes in the country. And while there have been plenty of highs on and off the pitch, the 27-year-old has also endured his fair share of lows.
With the spotlight firmly on Rashford and his United future, Express Sport takes you through a small selection of events making up a turbulent recent history at Old Trafford…
£650k fine
United fans began to question Rashford’s commitment to the club when, in January, he was spotted on a boozy night out in Belfast just hours before calling in sick for training.
Then-manager dropped him for an FA Cup clash with Newport County and fined him two weeks’ wages which, when you earn as much as Rashford, tips the scales at an eye-watering .
sucker punch
Rashford’s trip to Northern Ireland did not go down well with United legend Keane, who stung the under-fire forward by branding his antics ‘idiotic’.
“His behaviour is that of an idiot,” Keane told the podcast. “He’s making a few mistakes on the back of each other. He’s high-profile now, we see people out there on their phones, wanting to ring in and get players in trouble. He’s giving people that opportunity to go after him.”

Heartwarming moment
Rashford endeared himself to the nation in 2020 when he successfully campaigned for the government to change their policy on free school meals. And it seems as though the effects of that positive action are still being felt.
He made a visit to his old school, Button Lane, this week, where he gave out 420 Christmas presents to the pupils. And in one wholesome interaction, according to journalist , a student said to Rashford, “Thank you for the food as well, Marcus.”
30-goal season
Another of Rashford’s high moments at United came when he racked up 30 goals during the 2022/23 season. With 17 of them coming in the , six in Europe and seven others in the cup, many thought it was the wide man’s transition from star to superstar.
But it proved to be a false dawn. Rashford has come nowhere near those numbers in the past two seasons, and with a January exit on the cards, it seems as though that campaign will go down as his greatest in the famous red shirt.
Ten Hag punishment
United’s former boss upheld high standards of discipline during his time at the club. Rashford found that out when he overslept and reported late to a team meeting in December 2022.
Ten Hag responded by dropping him from the starting XI for a trip to Wolves, when Rashford was at the peak of his powers. The United academy graduate ended up having the last laugh by coming on late and scoring the winner.
Euro 2024 heartbreak
Along with star Jack Grealish, Rashford was one of the most striking omissions from the England squad Gareth Southgate took to Euro 2024.
The Three Lions star has 60 caps on his CV, but Ten Hag did not have much sympathy, admitting that poor form left him vulnerable to being dropped. Rashford has stated that he is gagging to be back in the fold by the 2026 World Cup.
