‘Waitrose ID’d me for the most random product – I couldn’t believe it’

‘Tis the season for tucking into mouthwatering treats, however have been left confused after being asked to show their identification when buying a dessert recently.

While getting when you’re over the age of 21 can be flattering, it can also be painful when you are in a rush to check out your item. It’s not just alcohol that staff members will check you for, restrictions also include tobacco products, fireworks, pain relief medicines, certain medicines, and sharp objects like knives or scissors.

And now, shoppers say they have been having to prove their age before tucking into Waitrose’s tiramisu. It comes as political editor and presenter for GB News, Christopher Hope, shared a video online of his experience getting ID’d for the dessert.

The 53-year-old said: “Tonight I was age-checked when I tried to buy Waitrose Tiramisu at its shop on Victoria Street, central London. What is going on?”

While using the self check-out, Christopher showed himself scanning the dessert and popping it in the bagging area. As he placed the £3.79 treat down, an alert sparked up on the screen. Accompanied by a giant exclamation point, the alert read: ‘Age confirmation required. Please wait for the assistant’.

One individual commented: “The same happened to me! It’s the alcohol, apparently.”

Others also pointed out that the dessert contains alcohol. Someone said: “It contains alcohol. Everyone who buys it is age checked.” “Guessing tiramsu contains alcohol,” said another.

Speaking about their experience in another supermarket, one other wrote: “I was once age checked for wine gums in Tesco.”

Traditionally, the base of a tiramisu cake are usually brushed with or soaked in a mixture of coffee and a liquor such as rum or marsala wine. So, if you want to buy one from a supermarket any time soon it might be wise to take your ID with you.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: ‘We’re really sorry that your tiramisu purchase was a more layered experience than you would want, we are working on getting this resolved as soon as possible.”
