Fans hoping that maybe, just maybe, Lionel Messi would actually come to Vancouver are still going to be disappointed: the superstar won’t be coming to B.C. Place in 2025.
Messi’s Inter Miami paid a first visit to Vancouver this past season, but in Major League Soccer’s unbalanced schedule cross-continent repeat visits are rare.
Indeed, the Whitecaps aren’t facing Miami at all in 2025, though that doesn’t mean they won’t play in Florida at all: the Caps are scheduled to play in Orlando on Aug. 30.
The best hope to see Messi in Vancouver remains the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2026, when B.C. Place will host seven games, including five group stage games, a round of 32 game and a round of 16 game.
The Whitecaps open the 2025 season with a CONCACAF Champions Cup clash Feb. 20 in Costa Rica against Deportivo Saprissa, who feature former Whitecaps star Kendall Waston. Waston, 36, returned to his old club in 2001 and is under contract until 2027. He’s made 33 appearances for Saprissa so far this season. He joined the Whitecaps in 2014 from Saprissa and played for the club until 2018. He served as the Whitecaps’ captain for his final two seasons.
The Caps open their MLS schedule three days later in Portland, then host Saprissa in their return fixture on Feb. 27 at B.C. Place. The first MLS home game at B.C. Place in 2025 is March 2 vs. MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy. The Caps will face both their Canadian rivals in March, hosting Montreal on March 8, travelling to Toronto on March 29.
• The Whitecaps host their Cascadian rivals Portland and Seattle on back to back weekends, May 31 and June 8, respectively.
• Expansion squad San Diego FC will make their first visit to B.C. Place on June 25.
• All MLS games are once again on Apple TV+. TSN once again has a subsiduary rights deal with Apple, which means they will show 14 Whitecaps games over the season. Details to be confirmed in the new year.
• The Whitecaps will look to win their fourth straight Canadian Championship, and will start their campaign in the quarterfinals. They may have a local rival in the frame, as TSS Rovers, of BC League1 is taking on the Canadian Premier League’s Valour FC for the chance to take on the Caps.
• The Leagues Cup will once again run in August; the schedule is to be announced.
