There’s still time to get a new TV before Christmas. (Image: Amazon / Samsung / Philips)

“It’s Christmas!” shouts Noddy Holder in Slade’s festive pop song – and that means it’s time to sit back, put your feet up, and watch the telly. What? Your TV is on the blink and you desperately need an upgrade? Then you’ve come to the right place.

I’m a big TV fan and have been writing about televisions for over a decade. Christmas is a great time to upgrade, as long as you can handle the fact that your new TV will probably overshadow all the other gifts under the tree.

I’ve picked out some from Amazon to suit a range of buyers – at the affordable end, those wanting a super-connected set and for those movie fans wanting in the best quality. But if you want it before Christmas, you need to order it as soon as you can.

Of course, if you just want to upgrade your TV, you might consider . While other festive sales at , and aslo includes a range of gogglebox offers.

Best last minute TV deals to buy before Christmas

Best pre-Christmas deal: Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED

I stand by this Fire TV Omni QLED, because I bought one myself last year. The best model is the 55-inch because it’s only £419 – – and only £10 more than the 50-inch model. That also matches the Black Friday price and Amazon says it will still be delivered in time for Christmas.

The Omni QLED sits towards the top end of Amazon’s TV options, offering a great connected experience and brilliant picture quality.

The Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED offers a range of attractive tech. Firstly, it’s a QLED TV, which means it has quantum dots in this LED display to boost the colours – and it looks great. It supports Dolby Vision IQ for striking HDR visuals when streaming the best content from the likes of Netflix or Disney+ and it also comes with handsfree .

Because this is a Fire TV, it offers a full range of streaming services, from BBC iPlayer through to Apple TV+, but also hooks into your Alexa account, so you can use your voice to control the TV, your smart home, or to search for content. If there’s a downside, it’s that there are adverts on the Fire TV home page that you’ll occasionally see.

Superb picture quality: Philips Ambilight OLED 809

If you want something that’s going to deliver the best image quality, then you want OLED. This TV tech offers amazing colours, awesome light control and the deepest blacks. This Philips OLED 809 TV has £300 off the price in this Amazon deal, so you can get a .

Ambilight sprays colour light up the walls thanks to the LEDs on the back, while the OLED panel on the front of this 65in TV produces a superb image. This is a great price for a TV this good.

This isn’t just a top-rated OLED TV however. One of the big parts of this TV is the Ambilight system that it supports. Ambilight puts LEDs on the rear of the TV so it can project colours across the room. These colours can match the content on the screen, giving an even more immersive experience.

The Ambilight OLED809 not only has a top-notch display – which supports Dolby Vision – but there’s Dolby Atmos sound, the Google TV platform for all your streaming apps, while it also supports gaming, so it’s perfect for your Xbox or PS5. This is also a great price for a 65-inch OLED TV. If you don’t fancy the light display – which some people don’t like – there are better OLED models, like the LG B4 suggested below.

Great value: Amazon Fire TV 2-Series

Amazon’s Fire TV is a great route to entertainment, because it offers loads of streaming services, is fully connected and nice to use. The entry-level of Amazon’s TVs is the 2-Series, which offer great value for money. There’s , with delivery before Christmas, costing just £209.

Amazon Fire TV 2-Series (40in)

The entry-level of Amazon’s Fire TVs gets you great value for a full HD TV with HDR skills. It offers a good streaming experience without breaking the bank.

The best thing about this 2-Series deal is that the 40-inch model is only £30 more than the 32-inch, but there’s a big difference in the sizes of those TVs, so if you can spare the cash, I’d pick the 40-inch model.

This is a Full HD TV, so you don’t get the latest 4K tech, but at this size you don’t really need it. What you do get, however, is HDR, so those pictures still look brilliant. Then you have the Alexa remote too, so you can press the button and talk to Alexa to search or control your devices. The downside of this model is that it’s a little plasticky, so it’s not the best looking TV out there.

LG’s OLED skills are expertly showcased in this entry-level model, giving you great visuals at a great price. This TV design also looks stunning.

The LG B4 has an advanced OLED display, offering 120Hz refresh rates so it’s great for connecting to your games console, while it also supports Dolby Vision, to deliver outstanding visuals on your streaming content, like Netflix or Prime Video.

The design of this TV is also great, because it’s really slim, so it looks great wherever you put it. Best of all, if you hurry to buy this TV you can have it in your home before Christmas day. There are few negatives to this set, including the sound quality.

Great smart TV: Samsung DU8000

This 2024 Samsung TV uses LED tech and delivers a great performance and is one of the best TVs you can buy for under £500. It’s quite a lot less than £500 thanks to the 35% reduction on Amazon, – the cheapest it’s been all year.

Samsung’s DU8000 was launched in 2024 and offers a great TV for under £500 in this 50in size. It offers Samsung’s Tizen platform for streaming apps and great 4K HDR quaity.

The Samsung DU8000 runs on Samsung’s smart TV platform, offering easy access to all the streaming services, while also offering 4K upscaling to make everything look sharp and giving you access to gaming features, through the likes of Xbox cloud gaming.

It’s only a 50Hz TV, so the refresh rate won’t give you the best experience when you plug in your console, but that’s to be expected at this price.

As highlighted throughout there are some things to note when shopping these deals. The (now £419) comes with adverts so occasionally your TV home page will be interrupted. The has backlit LEDs which won’t suit all viewers as it create a hue behind the screen. Something worth mentioning on the entry level is – while its an appealing £209 – it doesn’t come with 4K high-end viewing and its price reflects its Full HD screen. And those looking at the model should know that this set has a small 50Hz refresh rate, behind competitors.
