In his time, he built an empire that spanned generations and gained nationwide recognition.

However, the story of the Eddie Stobart family is also marked by tragedy.

Born in 1929 in Cumbria, Eddie Stobart established his haulage company in 1946, beginning with fertiliser transport.

Eddie’s second-youngest son, Edward, took the reins in 1973 at 21, propelling the business to national prominence.

Under Edward’s leadership, the company expanded from a modest operation with just eight lorries into a logistics giant with over 2,700 vehicles.

Edward’s innovations, such as dressing drivers in collars and ties and promoting a clean, friendly trucking industry image, earned the brand a cult following.

Fans even formed clubs to spot the iconic trucks on Britain’s motorways.

Edward stepped down from the company in 2004, selling his stake to his brother William and business partner Andrew Tinkler.

By then, the business was reportedly worth over £100 million.

Edward pursued other ventures but encountered financial difficulties, filing for bankruptcy in 2010.

In March 2011, Edward died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 56, leaving behind £220,000 in debt. His wife, Mandy, and two of his six children were at his bedside.

Despite his financial troubles, Edward’s impact on the haulage industry remains undeniable.

His brother William said at the time: “Edward… was the person who built the firm up. We have so much to thank him for.”

While Eddie Stobart retired quietly in Cumbria, William Stobart is now head of the family’s business.
