Tyson Fury in the corner against Oleksandr Usyk
‘s father will be absent from his corner during the highly anticipated bout against this Saturday night.
Despite previously facing backlash for his ringside advice, including from his own sibling, following Fury’s loss to Usyk in May, Fury Sr has remained silent on the upcoming fight and hasn’t been seen in Saudi Arabia where the event is taking place.
SugarHill Steward, the head trainer, confirmed that only he, Andy Lee, and the cutman will be supporting Fury from the corner. “Tyson Fury is just ready right now, along with myself. He has always had a silly demeanour, and playing around but this is a different side of him. he is 100 per cent ready,” Steward expressed.
When probed about the team’s strategy, Steward said, “It’s just how we normally train, I was taught by Emmanuel Steward. It’s always about hurting somebody, pain and knockouts. It was written on the walls of the Kronk gym. The harder you work the bigger the rewards. Everything that is boxing, that’s what he’s bringing on Saturday, that’s what his mind is geared towards.”
Meanwhile, Fury himself was succinct during a post-workout interview on Wednesday night, uttering just 17 words that encapsulated his intent: “A lot of pain. Smash and damage,” then “A lot of hurt,” followed by “Hurt,” and concluding with: “Serious hurt. A lot damage.”
During his workout, Usyk seemed unworried about Fury’s terse remarks, responding with a wry: “OK”. After outmanoeuvring Fury in May, Usyk is tipped to win this Saturday’s rematch.
Fury had an upper hand in the initial rounds but Usyk shifted the momentum from the eighth round. Despite nearly being knocked out in the ninth, Fury has promised a swift end to the rematch, announcing on DAZN: “Just for the record, I’m going to absolutely annihilate this motherf***** on Saturday night. No retirement, I’m cleaning them all out and he’s going to be first. Rabbit’s face,” He reflected positively on their first bout: “I was very happy with the performance (in the first fight). I didn’t get the result I wanted, but I was happy overall with what I did. It wasn’t any different to what I thought it would be. He was easier to hit.”
After the rematch, Fury aims for a trilogy with Usyk as well as targeting Anthony Joshua or possibly Dubois, given he holds the IBF title. Discussing his struggles with retirement, Fury confessed: “I’ve tried to walk away many times and have been unsuccessful,” also stating: “I meant it when I retired after Dillian Whyte back in 2022. I really meant that wholeheartedly. “I could have put my hands on the Bible and meant it. But it was very difficult to let it go so I’m not sure if I can ever let it go. What brings me back to the ring? Victory, winning the belts and keep going. It’s what I do.”
