Skin care isn’t just about putting goops and globs of product on your face; it also extends to the water we use. Dr. Brandon Kirsch, a board-certified dermatologist at Kirsch Dermatology in Naples, Florida, explained to HuffPost that your home’s “hard water” — that’s water with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium — can be detrimental to the skin and hair. This type of water can dry you out, clogging pores and hair with unnecessary mineral residue.

One solution to combat that stuffy water is a shower head filter. You attach these devices to your shower head, and when the water runs, it purifies the water as it flows out. We found one on sale previously recommended to HuffPost by dermatologist Dr. Brandon Kirsch that is NSF-certified (National Sanitation Foundation) to remove chlorine, lead and other pollutants. It has a 10,000-gallon capacity, so you won’t have to change the filter until it has filtered 10,000 gallons of water, and it’s super easy to install. Usually hovering at around $83.99, this baby’s 31% off, dropping its price down to just $57.59.

Several reviewers say this shower head filter helped relieve their dandruff, dry skin and general flaking within weeks of installation. “After moving to North Texas several years ago, I [immediately noticed] my hair/scalp felt yucky,” explains one reviewer. “My scalp never felt clean and my hair was becoming more damaged as time went on. Back in Ohio, we’d had a water softener, so I looked for something that could be attached to my shower head. This has been a game changer! My scalp feels so much better, and I notice that I require less shower gel to get a good lather going.”

To attach this filter, all you need to do is twist off your shower head and reattach it after screwing the filter in place. It fits most standard half-inch shower arms, so you likely won’t need to purchase an adapter. Aquasana recommends replacing the filter every six months. You can grab extra filters for less than $40 at Amazon.

“We live in southern California and the water here is more solid than liquid with all the lime and calcium. A show head can get clogged in a week or so. My wife wanted this because her hair is drying out and breaking and her scalp is flaking and she was freaking out forcing me to get spring water delivered so she could rinse her hair. We purchased this one and also purchased the Sprite high output as well, The Sprite was about 1/3 cheaper but it required everything to be taken apart. The Sprite also lasts about twice as long, BUT since the Sprite is an Inline filter it mush be taken off at least one side on the shower head or pipe and then the filter be taken apart and that can be a pain. Easy to scratch and took me soaking it in CLR to get it off. This Aquasana is about twice the cost of the Sprite High Output but. No disassembly, it is a simple change, no fighting the filter housing to get it off and it works marvelous. The water is much cleaner, a little softer even and my wife’s hour is no longer breaking and he scalp has stopped flaking. The shower head is crap but the filter is a better choice as it is much much more user friendly. We have had it for a month with no reduction in its performance.” — IrvPost

“I never write reviews, but this showerhead deserves one! I live in Colorado. The water has been very hard lately the past two years my skin has suffered this year and last during the winter my skin itches before bed every night two nights ago I changed my shower-head to this one. I have slept so good with not as much as two itches the entire night. This shower head is saving my hair and skin. My hair is even improved in just two nights! Don’t be alarmed by the black staining of your tub. It’s very temporary grab a rag wipe it down comes right off. It won’t stain your skin. Don’t jump in right away though. Let your water run for at least two minutes. Thank you to whoever created this wonderful showerhead.” — VaL

Very easy to attach. Just needed a wrench and minimal elbow grease! I switch out every 8 months for small house with two people. Important to follow easy-to-use instructions and try to catch the first few uses in a bucket to avoid staining the tub. The shower head can be changed out separately too, so you don’t need to buy a whole new unit when the time comes to change that out too!” — Cathy

“After moving to North Texas several years ago, I noticed right away my hair/scalp felt yucky. My scalp never felt clean and my hair was becoming more damaged as time went on. Back in Ohio we’d had a water softener, so I looked for something that could be attached to myshower head. This has been a game changer! My scalp feels sooo much better and I notice that I requires less shower gel to get a good lather going. My skin feels better, also. If you’re dealing with scalp issues, the first place to start is to get the minerals/deposits out of the water you’re using to wash your scalp! All the products you try won’t make a bit of difference if the water, itself, is not filtered. While our City tries to filter it, it can only get so much out of the water, so in the end this cleans it before it reaches my scalp or body. Be warned, though. Since it has a filter inside, when you move the temperature knobs it can take a minute or so for the water to change temp. as it has to run through the filter inside. So be patient and you’ll have a much better showering experience. […]” — IrvPost (This review has been edited for length. Read the full review.)

Promising review: “I rarely leave reviews but have to review this. This didn’t immediately show results for me but it started to show results after week 2.5. I have long healthy Asian hair and was skeptical I could really benefit that much more from anything except for maybe a keratin treatment. And wow was I wrong. I had no idea my already-nice hair could use this type of a boost. It made my shiny black hair SHINIER AND BOUNCIER…by a lot! It looks as if I ran shimmering shine spray from my roots down to the very ends of my hair, top to bottom. I couldn’t believe it. At first I thought I was imagining it, it seemed too good to be true. And oh, the bounce. I didn’t realize my hair needed bounce but now I don’t think I can live without it. As for my skin, it’s only been 2.5 weeks but I noticed that the pores on my nose are smaller.” — Jade

“Saved my hair! I was using a different brand of water filter and shower head and after 2 years of living in Florida with it my hair was frizzy and breaking at the nape of my neck. I just installed this new version last night and took my first shower with it. It was my last ditch effort before chopping all my hair off again. My hair turned out amazing! It didn’t feel gummy or frizzy and when I blow dried it, it fell straight like it should! I have a hard time growing my hair to begin with and this filter will definitely help save what I have! I thought the price point was expensive but investing in yourself is worth it! Also a few hours later my skin still feels soft and moisturized. I put on some shower oil when I got out and my skin soaked it all in instead of just laying on the surface.” — Mari Beeghly
