Weeds, the bane of many a garden or patio, stubbornly sprout between paving stones and can even wreak havoc on your property if left unchecked.
With the festive chill deterring most from tackling their weeds, the savvy team at has disclosed an ultra-simple method that could see your garden clear of the invasive plants before Christmas.
The experts have divulged a “DIY weed killer” that zaps weeds dead within two days, using common household items.
While all 3 of the ingredients needed can be found in your pantry, the experts noted you can create a litre of the weed killer for about 70p.
For your average batch size, mix 500ml of white vinegar with 30ml of table salt and a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid.

Decant it into a spray bottle, give it a good shake to blend properly, and you’re set but the experts had some warnings around when to use it.
They advised: “For the best results, apply this solution on a dry day when conditions allow it to work at its best. Within 24 hours, you’ll notice the weeds wilting, and within 48 hours, they should be completely dried out.
“This fast-acting, hassle-free solution not only keeps your outdoor spaces looking tidy but also avoids the environmental and the expense costs of store-bought weed killers.”

The mixture’s magic is largely thanks to the acetic acid in the vinegar which dehydrates the plant’s leaves. Meanwhile, the table salt interferes with water and nutrient absorption—effectively starving the weed.
Additionally, dish soap breaks down the plant’s protective layers, ensuring the mixture clings onto the foliage. This DIY approach to weed control offers a wallet-friendly alternative to pricey herbicides and prepares your home and garden for the Christmas festivities.
However, it should be noted that these kitchen staples can’t reach the weed’s roots. It will eliminate visible greenery, but you might need to apply the mix several times to keep the weeds at bay.
