Most families have traditions that are passed down through generations … but this one might make your stomach churn.
Content creator Myles Montplaisir is educating viewers about the history and usage of the family puke bowl.
“I think it’s one of those Midwest traditions that just keeps getting passed down, and no one realizes that other people think it’s strange, and it’s kind of become family tradition,” Montplaisir tells TODAY.com.
Unfamiliar with the tradition?
In Montplaisir’s hilarious viral video, the family puke bowl (which happens to be a clear plastic mixing bowl) is used for:
- vomit
- popcorn
- Halloween candy
- dress up
- worms
- scotcheroos
“I promise that all of us in the Midwest aren’t crazy,” he says with a laugh. “There’s a reason for it. And the reason is it’s because this is what my parents did, and what this is what their parents did.”
In fact, the bowl Montplaisir displayed in the video just so happens to be one of the puke bowls from his youth. His mom kept it all these years, and now Montplaisir has it ready for his 6-month-old son to grow into.
Comments on the video are widely divided between those who had similar multipurpose puke bowls and those who cannot stomach the thought of using a puke bowl for any other purpose. One viewer summed up the divide perfectly: “I thought everyone had one but my fiancé was horrified.”
“It’s kind of a gross topic,” Montplaisir admits. “But I guess I was more surprised at how many people truly know the tradition and participate in it. It’s kind of a wild thing.”
Montplaisir, who originally began creating content to celebrate Midwest culture, says, “If the puke bowl tradition is the way that we get the attention of the rest of the country, and it also it allows us to be proud to live here, I think that that that’s really exciting.”
