fans voiced their frustrations about last year’s Christmas Special after a festive-themed episode aired on December 18, 2023.
In the episode, both teams were tasked with finding “an item mentioned in a Christmas carol”.
This sparked a heated debate over what qualifies as a carol – and whether or not the Red Team’s choice fit the brief.
The Red Team opted for a picture frame featuring birds, which they claimed were linked to The 12 Days of Christmas.
However, fans quickly pointed out that The 12 Days of Christmas isn’t traditionally considered a carol.

Bargain Hunt viewers had a complaint about last year’s Christmas special
One viewer posted on Facebook saying: “I would argue that this is not a carol, which are generally considered to be songs with a religious background.”
Others chimed in, criticising the choice further. One commenter noted: “Even if we include The 12 Days of Christmas, the birds named were specific, and there were just generic birds on their item. It should have been disqualified.”
However, others disagreed that there was anything wrong with the Red Team’s choice.
One person hit back: “The 12 Days of Christmas IS a religious song.”

Some fans thought the Red Team did not follow the brief
Another shared: “From what I remember each of the gifts has some religious meaning… I can’t remember many/any at the moment, but I think the two turtle doves represent the Old and New Testaments; 10 Lords a Leaping are the Ten Commandments: so it is a religious song, but I don’t know if that qualifies it as a Carol.”
This year’s Bargain Hunt Christmas Specials were filmed at The Lichfield Auction Centre on October 22.
Presenter Eric ‘Sleigh Bells’ Knowles hosted the festive episodes, with experts Izzie Balmer and Raj Bisram advising the Red and Blue Teams.
Auctioneer Richard Winterton described the experience as “lots of fun.”
He added: “It was wonderful to have our Bargain Hunt friends back to Lichfield with a packed saleroom eager for the auction action.
“This was our third time hosting the Christmas Specials, and we had lots of fun filming. Don’t miss the episodes as they are sure to be real Christmas crackers.”
Four episodes in total were filmed that day, with two designated as Christmas specials.
They will air on One at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, December 16, and Friday, December 20.
The festive episodes will then be repeated on Two at 7.15 a.m. on December 18 and 6.25 a.m. on Christmas Day for those who missed them.
