There are severe delays on the after a horror vehicle fire in Northamptonshire.

Emergency services have raced to the scene between Junction 16 and Junction 18.

A post on the National Highways website reads: “The M1 in Northamptonshire is closed northbound between J16 (for Northampton) and J18 (for Rugby) due to a vehicle fire.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are at scene assisting with emergency traffic management.”

It is not known whether there have been any injuries as a result of the blaze. Northamptonshire Police has been approached for an update.

Police update as emergency services attend scene

In a social media update, Northamptonshire Police said: “Due to a vehicle fire on the northbound carriageway of the M1, the motorway has been closed at junction 16 while emergency services deal with this incident.

“Please find an alternative route. We will update once the junction has re-opened,” they added.

National Highways advice for drivers affected by lorry blaze closures

National Highways is advising diverted traffic to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol, telling drivers to:

Exit the M1 northbound at J16 and take the 1st exit at the roundabout onto the A45Continue westbound on the A45 to Flore Roundabout and take the 2nd exit onto the A45 Weedon BypassContinue westbound along the A45 Weedon Bypass until the roundabout with the A5.Turn right at the roundabout and join the A5 Watling Street and continue until the roundabout with the A428At the roundabout, join the A428 and continue over the Railport Approach roundabout until the A5/A428 Parklands RoundaboutAt the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A5 and continue eastbound to then re-join the M1 northbound at J18
