Carrots will stay fresh for weeks if stored properly in the kitchen
It may seem simple to throw carrots in the fridge when you come back from the shops, but it can actually cause them to spoil quickly since they are not being stored properly.
Kristin Marr, an expert and founder of has shared that fridges are designed to remove moisture from the air to prevent condensation which can cause to shrivel up.
She said: “Carrots and celery go limp when exposed to the dry fridge air for an extended period of time.
“The dry air of the fridge causes the carrots and celery to experience moisture loss. Just these veggies in the crisper drawer isn’t enough.”
Storing carrots correctly takes less than 10 minutes to do but will ensure they stay “fresh and crispy with the best flavour” for weeks rather than wilting after a few days.

How to store carrots properly
The best way to store both whole and cut carrots is to place them in a container filled with water as it ensures they stay hydrated for a long time.
Carrots naturally lose moisture over time, especially when kept in the fridge, but having them already in water creates a barrier that slows down decomposition and extends their shelf life.
Your carrots will be crisp and fresh for up to two weeks or even longer than they normally would, but make sure to change the water every four to five days.
Method
Do not wash or peel the carrots before storing them, but cut off the green fronds on top of your carrots if they have them as they can draw moisture from the vegetable.
Fill a container with cold water. Glass containers work best if you have any and you may need to cut carrots into more sizable pieces if you plan to store them in mason jars.
Secure the cover on the container or screw the lid on properly if using a jar.

Place the carrots on a shelf in your fridge, and change the water every few days to maintain freshness.
The cold will keep the carrots fresh but they will now also be protected from becoming limp, spoiled and flavourless by the dry air in the fridge.
