Huge boost for UK city as Britain’s ‘most famous’ seaside hotel gets £16m facelift

An in a popular coastal resort is all set to get a £16 million revamp.

The Grand Brighton – a landmark hotel situated on ‘s iconic seafront – is steeped in history and renowned for its timeless elegance.

It opened its doors in 1864, designed by architect John Whichcord Jr. as a symbol of Victorian luxury, and quickly became a favoured retreat for royalty, celebrities, and high society, cementing its status as a .

Known as the “Palace by the Sea,” it was one of the first buildings in the UK to feature an elevator. The hotel has been part of numerous significant events, including ABBA’s stay following their victory at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and an IRA bombing attempt in 1984.

Despite the attack, the hotel reopened its doors shortly after and remains a symbol of resilience.

Now, the hotel is revamping the entire customer experience with more luxurious rooms and suits. The recent £16 million refurbishment has added modern touches while preserving its classic charm.

Designed by the award-winning Garuda Design, the luxurious new rooms and stunning sea-view suites seamlessly blend the Grand’s rich history with a touch of contemporary flair, ensuring its proud legacy appeals to both returning guests and the next generation of travelers.

The refurbishment included extensive updates to guest rooms, public spaces and conference facilities, blending the building’s Victorian heritage with modern luxury.

By March 2025, all 205 rooms will be fully refurbished, and by Easter, a new spa and gym will mark the completion of the 15-month renovation project.

The iconic seafront façade has been meticulously restored to enhance its historical features while ensuring durability against coastal weather. To enhance the guest experience, revamped restaurants and bars have been introduced, along with improvements to the spa and wellness facilities.

Last year, Leumi UK, a specialist property lender, granted a £43.7 million loan to an SPV of the Fattal Hotel Group, supporting the acquisition and refurbishment of the iconic hotel.

Guy Vardi and Yaniv Amzaleg at Fattal Hotel Group said at the time: “We were delighted to partner with Leumi UK on the acquisition of this iconic hotel.

“The hotel is a perfect fit with the rest of our Limited Edition Hotels in the UK which include the Midland Manchester Hotel and the Dilly Hotel in London Piccadilly.

“We have big plans for the hotel and will now start planning the extensive renovation program. The Grand Brighton hotel is the 18th hotel we acquired in the last 12 months together with our institutional investors in the Fattal European Partnership, with a transaction volume of more than 800 million Euros.”
