Gavin and Stacey star ‘tears up’ as she recalls filming ‘emotional’ last scene of finale

Gavin and Stacey fans may need to have tissues at the ready when they sit down for the last-ever episode of the hit sitcom this Christmas Day.

Main cast member Alison Steadman, who portrays Pam, appeared on today’s (Saturday, December 14) episode of Saturday Kitchen to chat about the special with Matt Tebbutt.

She appeared to be slightly teary-eyed as she remembered filming her final scenes with the cast, which includes Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, Ruth Jones and James Corden.

“It was really emotional,” the actress shared. “We had the best time, it was lovely. We all really enjoyed it.

“And being back in Barry, you know, everyone’s so warm and friendly, it was lovely.”

Steadman then wiped a tear from her eye as she continued: “But of course, when we finally wrapped, it was really sad.

“Because we think, ‘Ooh, we won’t be together again’. We were all really emotional.”

Saturday Kitchen’s sommelier Olly Smith then quipped: “You’ll always all be together on iPlayer, though. We can rewatch them whenever we like”, prompting a hearty chuckle from Steadman.

While fans are expecting plenty of laughs from the special episode there could also be some heartbreak and surprises.

The last Christmas episode in 2019 famously ended with the cliffhanger of Jones’ character Nessa proposing to Smithy (Corden).

But where will their relationship be five years later? And what about those rumours that Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) could be killed off?

Recalling more about her experience with the hugely successful sitcom, the actress also revealed the one thing writers Corden and Jones never did with the scripts.

“Ruth and James, they are brilliant writers,” she said. “And they never let us down.

“They never change lines. Because very often, when you’re acting, the night before a shoot you’ll get, ‘Oh sorry, that’s cut. Learn this’, and you think, ‘Oh no, I’ve got to learn another two pages for the morning’.

“They never do that. Once their script is locked that’s what you do. Because the writing is so brilliant. They don’t need to change it.”

Olly asked: “So very little ad-libbing on set, as well?” To which Steadman firmly replied: “No ad-libbing.”

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale airs at 9pm on December 25th on iPlayer and One.
