The under-30’s struggle more with loneliness at this time of year than any other age group – even more so than pensioners. Over three-quarters (77%) of Generation Z report feeling lonely during the festive season, compared to 47% of the over 60’s.
Distance and lack of connection are key contributors, according to new research from all-in-one online video chat platform,which has been designed to complement offline friendships by fostering meaningful online connections. The reasons given for feeling isolated include living far away from their families (14%) and not being able to travel to see them (20%) while over a quarter (27%) wished they had a wider social network.

Yet, with Christmas approaching, many are dreading the pressure to attend parties and gatherings on dark, cold nights. While 79% of youngsters say they love the holidays, 27% struggle to go out and mingle and nearly a quarter (24%) would rather socialise online during winter months.
And 23% of Gen Z say they struggle with loneliness at this time of the year because they don’t have a large social group, or a significant other (20%) to cosy up with.
Although Generation Z is most affected by loneliness during the winter, it’s also the most proactive group when it comes to seeking out solutions. 79% actively take steps to feel less lonely and 81% say they have found ways to overcome feelings of isolation.
69% of Gen Z have alleviated their winter loneliness by making new connections online, and 66% have found that using video chat services specifically helps. What’s more, one in five (22%) have reduced feelings of isolation by engaging in meaningful conversations through digital platforms.

Additionally, around a third (31%) have joined a gym, 30% set aside specific times for social activities, and 14% have taken up volunteering for good causes. Adopting a pet (19%) or spending time with furry friends has provided a happiness boost for one in five (20%).
