With more than half of the UK population owning a pet (51 percent), many are likely to have a pet pooch by their side.
There are 10.6 million pet in the UK, but which breed is the most popular? What may come to a surprise for many, veterinary nurse Gemma Renwick revealed the crossbreed is the most common mutt.
“They may not be a ‘breed’ as such, but they’re still the most popular choice for UK owners,” said vet nurse Gemma – and for good reason too.
“Crossbreeds are generally thought of as healthier than pedigree ,” said Gemma, who referenced the likelihood of health problems with inbreeding.
However, which breeds make up the crossbreed are likely to influence the health of the pet pooch.

“When considering adding a Crossbreed to your life, it’s important to make sure both parents are healthy,” advised Gemma.
“Be sure to look for a breeder who provides health testing for the parents for any specific breed health concerns.”
The second most popular dog breed seen in 2024 is the Labrador Retriever, who are prone to eating “anything and everything”.
Gemma said: “Labs are typically sociable, fun-loving, devoted and affectionate family dogs, but are often used as working dogs.

“Having originally been bred as Gundogs, they require a good amount of exercise, scent work, and mental stimulation to remain happy and healthy.”
Any Lab owners should be aware of the most common health conditions that could affect their pet; these include: joint issues, arthritis and deteriorating eyesight.
In third place as the most popular dog of 2024 is the cockapoo, which has risen in popularity over the years. “Cockapoos tend to be loving, intelligent and high energy,” said Gemma, but added that their grooming requirements need to be considered.
“While their coat type can vary, Cockapoos are often prone to tangles and matts and will need regular grooming,” Gemma explained.
In fourth place is the “intelligent and easy to train” German Shepherd, which “make loving family pets”. And in fifth place is the English Cocker Spaniel which is “lively” and “loves to play”.
