Log burners not only make a room look incredibly cosy but are an affordable way to cut down on energy bills, but keeping them clean can be tricky if you do not use the right items.
The glass on log burners can become with soot and smoke which can make viewing the difficult as well as make the rest of a room look grimy.
However, there is a simple way to keep the log burner glass sparkling without spending ages scrubbing it and that is to use wood ash.
The experts at said: “Use a damp crumpled paper towel or newspaper, dip it in fine wood ash and use this to rub the stove glass clean.”
It may sound bizarre, but is alkaline and helps break down the acidic residues in wood smoke so it can easily be wiped away.

The reason it is highly recommended to clean with newspaper is that it is soft enough not to scratch the fragile glass of the log burner while also being able to quickly absorb the soot.
How to clean log burner glass with wood ash
To begin, make sure you wait a while until your log burner is complete as you should never clean it while it still feels hot.
Having water touch a log stove while hot can cause the glass to break but also risk you being burned.

The expert said: “Avoid spraying water on hot wood burner glass – this could cause the glass to crack or shatter.”
Instead, ensure the glass is cool then take a piece of crumbled newspaper and thoroughly wet it.
Scrunch up the newspaper so that is damp and then dip it into the wood ash.

Gently and carefully scrub the glass in a circular motion and any residue should be wiped away instantly.
