The reason it is highly recommended to clean with newspaper is that it is soft enough not to scratch the fragile glass of the log burner while also being able to quickly absorb the soot.

The expert said: “Avoid spraying water on hot wood burner glass – this could cause the glass to crack or shatter.”

Instead, ensure the glass is cool then take a piece of crumbled newspaper and thoroughly wet it.

Scrunch up the newspaper so that is damp and then dip it into the wood ash.

Gently and carefully scrub the glass in a circular motion and any residue should be wiped away instantly.
