The first trailer for an enticing new documentary pulling back the curtain on a controversial TV institution has just been revealed.
Promising an intimate look at the behind-the-scenes scandals and drama behind one of the biggest shows of the 1990s, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action is bursting onto at the start of 2025.
Eventually labelled “the king of trash TV” according to the trailer, Springer launched his show in 1991 and quickly became a phenomenon, launching the host into international stardom as the first daytime talk show presenter to topple Oprah Winfrey in the ratings.
However, as this documentary will uncover, the outrageous fights that occurred on a weekly basis were nothing compared to what was going on when the cameras weren’t rolling.
The trailer begins with a confessional from Springer, who died in April last year: “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise for everything I’ve ever done. I have ruined the culture.”
Netflix teases ‘dark truths’ behind Jerry Springer show in new documentary
Intriguing footage from the docuseries includes exclusive interviews with producers who worked on the show, one of whom vows he’ll “never talk about it again”.
The trailer concludes with an ominous shot of a police car with lights flashing before cutting to Springer testifying in court.
“It’s a television show,” he emphatically maintains in the archive footage. “We will all survive it.”
An official synopsis for the documentary reads: “This jaw-dropping, premium two-part series will tell the story of The Jerry Springer Show as it’s never been told before.
The new two-part documentary is coming to Netflix in January
“Packed with extraordinary first-hand testimony and revelations from show insiders, the series explores how this daytime talk show became one of the biggest and most outrageous TV hits of the nineties.
“But behind the entertaining facade lay some darker truths. As we hear from the producers and ex-guests of The Jerry Springer Show, a murkier picture begins to emerge of the destruction it caused, raising renewed questions about who was responsible, and how far things should go in the name of entertainment.”
Springer was an active presenter of TV, radio and podcast shows until his retirement in 2022.
Former producers and guests will be sharing their stories
His most recent television appearances were on the show Judge Jerry, which ran for three seasons until it was cancelled in March 2022.
A year after stepping back from his career he died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 79.
