One potato storage hack will keep them fresh for longer
With Christmas fast approaching, and the rising cost of festive foods, you’ll likely be looking for ways to keep your food fresh for longer.
One food that will always be popular at Christmastime is potatoes, and although they can sometimes be quite long-lasting, other times they may start going off rather quickly.
Luckily, storage experts at have shared one tip that will keep your potatoes fresh for two weeks longer – meaning you can purchase them now and they’ll still be perfect on Christmas Day.
They said: “Potatoes last longest when stored in a dark, cool place, such as a cupboard. You should ensure your potatoes are well-ventilated to avoid sprouting, so never store them in airtight containers.
“Instead keep your potatoes in a netted/paper bag or a wicker basket instead.”

They further added: “Because potato bags are typically porous, placing one apple with your potatoes can help extend their shelf life.
“The ethylene from the apple ripens fruit quickly but in small amounts, it actually preserves potatoes and makes them last an extra week or two. Just make sure the storage container is ventilated for optimal results.”
Another tip shared by the experts reveals how to store your carrots to ensure they last until Christmas Day, alongside your potatoes, by storing them in a jar of water.

Another storage hack will keep your carrots fresh
Keeping carrots in water can ensure they stay fresh for as long as a month – and it will help cut down the food prep you must do on the big day itself.
To store carrots this way, start by washing them and then trimming the green heads off. Then, store them in water inside an airtight container. Although the pros suggest a jar, other choices are fine, too.
The water then helps keep them fresh, maintaining the crunchy texture for when you are ready to cook.
