fans tuned in to watch the final episode of the series on Wednesday night- and many were not impressed.
DI Ruth Calder (played by Ashley Jensen) and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) were back as they wrapped up their mysterious murder case. However, as the episode came to an end and with their culprit locked up, fans couldn’t hide their disappointment.
Many fans claimed they would no longer watch the series, while others said they were confused by the plot. Others felt the absence of Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall).
Taking to X, one fan complained: “This really has been the worst season of #Shetland so far. The writing is poor, the acting worse and it feels like the narrative has been strung out far longer than the story requires. Time to call it a day.”
Another agreed: “Not exactly the most gripping series. And I don’t care about any of the characters. Bring back Jimmy and Duncan! #Shetland.”

“I HATE it when the final episode and eventual resolution have absolutely nothing to do with the 8 previous episodes. This had better not be it…” a third added.
“Bit lost now #Shetland,” one fan admitted while another said: “Tosh isn’t the same character without Jimmy Perez.”
One viewer stated: “Wasn’t sure about the first series of the new Shetland. I think this will be my last, it’s all over the place.#Shetland.”
However, not everyone shared the same opinion, as one fan praised: “Brilliant episode.”
Another echoed: “Wasn’t sure how I’d like Shetland without Perez but Tosh and Ruth are a good partnership!”
During a recent appearance on Lorraine, lead actress Ashley confirmed there would be another series of Shetland.

When host Lorraine Kelly quizzed the actress on another series, she replied: “There is, yes.”
The host chipped in: “Because you can never take it for granted, can you?”
“No,” Ashley replied before adding: “They actually commissioned two series on the back of last year straight away, which was a great confidence boost.”
The DI Ruth Calder star also addressed whether the series could end.
Lorraine asked: “There has got to be more, Ashley, surely? It would be crazy not to be.”
Ashley shrugged as she teased: “Fingers crossed, yeah.”
